Drink Coffee for Decreasing Risk of Stroke

KOMPAS.com - There are many reasons why we need to drink coffee in the recommended amount. This is because, from various studies, showed that coffee offers many health benefits. Of reducing pain during exercise, sharpens the brain, preventing cervical cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, to fight obesity. Today, coffee drinkers, especially women, also known tend to have a lower risk of stroke.

This latest study conducted in Sweden, where several women were asked to drink at least a cup of coffee every day. Seen they tend to have a risk of stroke by 22-25 percent lower compared with those who drank coffee less than this amount or not at all.

"Coffee drinkers will be pleased with this news," said Dr. Sharonne N Hayes, cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. "Coffee is often said to be a bad influence for the heart. In fact, there are no studies about the coffee that is convincing to say that coffee is bad for health. If you drink coffee now, you might do well, and will not be hurt," he said.

Even so, Hayes and other doctors do not recommend that people who do not like to drink coffee to be sipping coffee. Therefore, their study does not prove that coffee may reduce risk of stroke, but that coffee drinkers tend to have a lower risk of stroke.

Swedish researchers led by Susanna Larsson of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm said, from many previous studies, coffee consumption and stroke showed conflicting findings. "There is no yielded a consistent message," said Dr. Cathy Sila, a stroke neurologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland.

For this study, researchers looked at the condition of 34 670 Swedish women aged 49-83 years, about 10 years. Researchers then look for information, how much coffee is consumed by the respondent, at the beginning of the study. Then, the researchers checked medical records to find out how many women who later suffered a stroke. Seen there are 1680 cases of stroke, including those who drank less than a cup of coffee, or do not drink at all.

Researchers adjust the differences between the groups that influence the risk of stroke, such as smoking, overweight, high blood pressure, and diabetes, and still saw a lower stroke risk in coffee drinkers.

Regarding these findings, Larsson said, benefits the coffee will be felt if the women drank one or two cups a day. Nothing more.
